New Look

The old theme was looking a little plain to me, so I decided to switch things up a bit.  I like the dark background and the new banner image.  But there are a couple of things I’m concerned about.  I am wondering if the text is a bit too small and whether it’s too difficult to tell where one post ends and the next begins.  What do you think?  Let me know…

  1. Looks good to me but then, as you can tell from my site, I like the dark stuff. One thing is that having off-white text AND white hyperlinks may mean some don’t see links when they’re there.

  2. I like the dark look also and the banner is perfect. I do think the text is too small, but then maybe I should put on my glasses . . . 🙂

  3. I like the banner! I agree with Literary Feline, the text is a bit too small. Actually, I think it might be the same size as what I have, only it seems smaller perhaps because of the light on dark background. I nearly missed this post too, when scrolling down your page; I only knew it was here because of my feed.

  4. Love the new look! Maybe the text is a little small, but other than that, all great. Love the banner image. Makes me feel like I need to get designing!

  5. Arukiyomi – The darkness of the theme was the main reason I chose it, I also noticed the problem with the links.

Literary Feline – I think the banner maybe the best part of the new look. Yeah, the text size is a big issue for me.

Siew Cooper – This post is probably one of the more difficult to find with the new look because it is short.

    gentle reader – Thanks!

  6. I like it – I’ve been thinking of ways to spice up my site, but if you knew my HTML skills, you’d understand why it’s better if I leave well enough alone 🙂

Anyway, I don’t have any problems with the layout – color, size, everything looks good to me!

  7. You have a gorgeous-looking blog…I am visiting for the first time courtesy Dewey’s blogroll game but I want to come and spend a longer time here. I would like to add you to my blogroll so I can return.

  8. Wow. I LIKE it!! Seems to be a lot of change going on lately! Cool new look!!

  9. I love the banner, Matt…absolutely perfect for a book blog.

I do have a problem reading the text because of its size and the dark background is hard on my eyes for some reason. That might not be the case with a larger font, though, hard to say. But that may just be me…I’ve had these eyes for a long time. 🙂

  10. Bibliolatarist – Nice thing about a free WordPress blog is that they provide these themes for you so you don’t have to do any coding. I know html but they use php which I don’t know.

Lotus Reads – Thanks for visiting, glad you like it. I will definitely be checking out your blog.

Stephanie – Thanks, I like it too but might have to change it because of the small text…

Sam Houston – I’m looking into changing the look again because of the small text, I might be able to change the size but with WordPress I’m not exactly sure how to do that.

  11. It’s really quite simple. Go into Admin and then presentation. Click on Theme editor and click on the Stylesheet link on the right. You’ll see your stylesheet coding in the main window. You need to find the text for your blog and it’s probably the text reference in your body section which should be near the top of the document. It’ll say something like 10px. Experiment with this by increasing the font size, say to 12px or 14px. Save changes and then view the blog to see what it looks like.

I’ve noticed that you’ve got your blog hosted at so much of the below might be irrelevant but I might be wrong…

One problem you might have doing this is that your stylesheet may well not be editable for security. You need to be able to get to your stylesheet via FTP, change the CHMOD settings on style.css from 644 or whatever they are, to 777.

You can find your style.css file somewhere on your server at

Once you’ve done this, you can edit the stylesheet as I outlined above but don’t forget to then change the settings back to whatever it was before you changed it.

  12. Arukiyomi – As far as I know WordPress does not allow you to FTP to your site when it’s a free blog hosted on their site. Also, I have tried changing the style sheet from the administration menu but it looks like I would have to buy the option to edit the stylesheet. Last night it allowed me to preview changes I made to the stylesheet but the page says I have to purchase an upgrade to make it visible to the public.

I’m thinking about hosting my blog on a friends site or paying for a hosting service in which case I’d be able to modify the styles.

  13. I haven’t read the other comments (I’m running late for an appointment) but I did think this small post was part of the award challenge post. But I think that people who are return readers will just get used to it and know where things begin and end. New readers might have a little more trouble. The test is small, but not too small to read. I’ve seen smaller. Or maybe not smaller, but this small and say, light blue on a medium blue background. The high contrast here makes it more readable.

  14. Whoa! Matt, you pulled a fast one on me. I had to scroll back up to the top to make sure I was at the right blog. : ) I’m incredibly late, but nice new blog! I’ve always thought about going dark but, for some reason, I just don’t have the guts.

  15. I really love the new look. The text is small but it takes only a little keyboard command to increase it, so that doesn’t bother me at all. The different colour for titles is enough to detect the different posts, I think.

  16. I love this new look, it’s so elegant. The text is a bit small for me, though.

  17. Dew – I was counting on the high contrast to make things better with the text size, glad it works, at least to some degree.

J.S. Peyton – “Do not attempt to adjust your monitor. We are controlling transmission. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical.”

imani – Glad you like the look and thanks for reminding me there are keyboard shortcuts for things like text size. You’ll see I’ve made use of your reminder in a post above.

tara – See my post above about the keyboard shortcuts for increasing text size. Hope it makes things easier on the eyes.
